This Week’s Must Reads

Happy Comic-Con week, y’all!

Tales Designed To Thrizzle #8

Psychotic Jessica Fletcher. Two trains doin’ it. The real story of the first trip to the Moon. Glorious.

Chew: Secret Agent Poyo #1

A great introduction to Chew‘s sense of humor if you’re a newcomer, and a hilarious look at one of its best minor characters if you’re a fan long time fan. This book is perfectly nuts.

Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens #1

I’m a big Octopus Pie fan, so I’m very happy that Meredith Gran has a new print series. It’s especially cool that all of the covers and back up stories have been/will be done by other amazing women in comics (at least it seems that way, correct me if I’m wrong!)

Conan The Barbarian #6

Hands down one of the best love stories I’ve read in comics in a long time. Who knew?

Revival #1

Fargo meets… Walking Dead? Sweet Tooth? Really cool and creepy first issue.

Runners-Up: Spider-Men #3, Avenging Spider-Man #9 Dancer #3, Before Watchmen: Minutemen #2, Bulletproof Coffin Disinterred #6, Atomic Robo Real Science Adventures #4, Lil Depressed Boy #12, Scarlet Spider #7

ALSO!
Richard Stark’s Parker: The Score

I loved The Hunter and The Outfit, and I think The Score is the best Parker book yet. I’m a sucker for a good heist story, and this one has got it all. Dames! Betrayal! Suspense!

This Week’s Must Reads

Popeye #3

Hilarious Wimpy-centric story (my favorite kind!) with pitch perfect art by Tom Neely.

Before Watchmen: Ozymandias #1

Completely stunning art. I cannot believe we get to look at this book every month. I already can’t wait to gawk at the next issue.

Sweet Tooth #35

Big “holy cow” moment at the end, especially for those who have been reading single issues since the beginning. We’ve come so far and we’re so close to answers!

Ultimate Spider-Man #12

Poor Miles. This issue’s a bit of a heart breaker.

Mind MGMT #2

What an intriguing mystery so far. I love the way Matt Kindt plays around with the comic format. It’ll behoove you to read every bit of text in this series.

Also, the long awaited…
Batman Earth One

A must-read for Batman fans, especially if you’re a sucker for alternative universe type stories like I am.

Fallen Superheroes @ SHQ

FALLEN SUPERHEROES BOOK RELEASE @ SHQ
FRIDAY, JULY 6th
STARTING AT 7pm
Join us on Friday, July 6th to celebrate the release of Fallen Superheroes! Photographer Eric Curtis and writers Scott Allen Perry and Adam Mock will be here to sign copies, say hello, and share a beer.

“Fallen Superheroes is a caricatured look at extraordinary everyday people through the visionary lens of celebrity photographer Eric Curtis. Using superheroes as the allegory, Curtis explores the not-so-glamorous and sometimes dark realities of those who strive to live their dreams against all odds. Curtis once again pairs his trademark imagery with the witty prose of Scott Allen Perry and Adam Mock (Mime Very Own Book), making Fallen Superheroes an eye-popping, gut-busting, esoteric commentary on the unique individuals who color our lives.”

See you on Friday!

This Week’s Must Reads

Before Watchmen: Nite Owl #1

My second favorite of the BW premier issues so far, right after Minutemen. Love Nite Owl and Rorschach together. Hrm.

The New Deadwardians #4

The Deadwardians world gets more engrossing and fascinating every issue. I’ve really been enjoying this series.

Scalped #59

So close to the end, it’s time for… big crazy balls-to-the-wall bloodbath shoot out! Who (if any) will be the last man standing on the Rez?

Spider-Men #2

What a delightful series so far. A must read for fans of Spider-Man (from any universe.)

Runners Up: Fatima: The Blood Spinners #1, BPRD Hell On Earth: Exorcism #1, American Vampire #28, Amazing Spider-Men #688, Atomic Robo Real Science Adventures #3, Incredible Hulk #10, John Carter Gods of Mars #4, Fatale #6, Reset #3, Prophet #26, Wolverine and the X-Men #12

NOTABLE BOOKS!
Birdseye Bristoe

A charming and unique graphic novel about the crafty and easy going (Uncle) Birdseye entertaining his great niece and nephew for the summer in their tiny Southern town. Beautiful colored pencil art. The book is a really neat mix of story, diagrams, and nifty factoids that make it unlike anything I’ve read before.

Daredevil Born Again – Artist’s Edition

Gigantic and gorgeous. Mazzucchelli’s artwork deserves such a glorious format. We’ve still got a few of these puppies left, but they’re going fast. Don’t sleep on this one!

Johnny Ryan Book Release Party @ SHQ

WAR & PENIS BOOK RELEASE @ SHQ
FRIDAY, JUNE 22nd
STARTING AT 7pm

Your wait for disgusting and hilarious new Johnny Ryan comics is over! Join Johnny and the SHQ crew this Friday, June 22nd to celebrate the release of his new book, War & Penis.

The story behind it all:
“A few months ago, illustrators / comic book makers / funny people Johnny Ryan (creator of Prison Pit, Blecky Yuckerella, Angry Youth Comix) and Frédéric Fleury (founder of Frederic Magazine) started insulting each other by posting obscene, crude, hilarious drawings of the other on their Facebook walls. As they are both proud young men and also profoundly disturbed in their brains, they kept this going for, like, six months or something. Finally, here is the book that collects all those drawings, including an introduction by ZEN MAFIA’s Nate Walton, explaining how the whole sorry mess began.”

RSVP on Facebook here.
