This is technically comics related!

The Action Suits are always in heavy rotation here at SHQ.

From “A Short History of The Action Suits”:

The Action Suits will be, deservingly so or not, a curious footnote in somebody’s history of late-20th Century bubblegum music because of the fact that world-famous cartoonist Peter Bagge sat on a picklebucket and banged the skins with ’em for awhile. Not on this song, though (sorry fans). Formed in Seattle in 1995 by roommates Eric Reynolds, Andy Schmidt and another cartoonist, Al Columbia, the three played all of one show together, a Halloween party held by the cartoonist Jim Woodring and his wife, Mary, on Oct. 31, 1995. The band also included during this time cartoonist and fellow-roommate Jeremy Eaton, who played absolutely no instruments and didn’t even sing, but still played an inarticulably vital role in the whole gestalt, and must be mentioned because of it.

With drums mounted on a sawhorse (“drums” being relative: they were technically spare drum parts, a coffee can, chopsticks, and some scrap metal), the guitar and bass plugged into one shitty amplifier, one mic affixed by a wire clotheshanger to the drums and another with a jerryrigged stand made from a broomstick and christmas tree base, and the aforementioned picklebucket, the three swapped instruments every song despite being cumulatively proficient in perhaps one and a half while Eaton, dressed as an extra from a late-60s era Jack Kirby comic, danced in dynamic bystander poses.

Peter Bagge, who shared Reynolds’ love for bubblegum pop, hadn’t drummed in 18 years but was still Buddy Fucking Rich compared to the rest of the bunch and took pity on them, joining that very night. Al took pity on himself and moved to Massachusetts within weeks.

Luckily, they still have a few songs up on their Myspace (whatever that is), so you can check them out if you haven’t had the privilege of doing so already. I feel as though they are criminally under-appreciated.

Listen to them! LOVE THEM AS I DO.

This Week’s Must Reads

We’ve made it to another Friday, friends! Congratulations to us all.

Fatale #2

We get to see a little bit more of the supernatural side to this story and it is super cool. Can’t wait to see what happens.

Locke and Key: Clockworks #4

Finally getting the origin of how Dodge became one evil bastard! I’m both sad that this series has so few issues left and excited to read the conclusion to all this madness.

Winter Solider #1

The art is fantastic, and I’m stoked that there’s a new spy series every month now! I love me some secret agent stuff.

Sweet Tooth #30

EEK! Creepsville!

Runners up: Amazing Spider-Man #679, Rachel Rising #5, Animal Man #6

Mini Mini Sneek Peek

We’ve been working on putting out a few mini comics with some very talented folks. We’re very excited about the whole thing, so excited that we just can’t keep it to ourselves anymore! Here’s a sneak peek of some lil’ books that we will have for sale at our LA Zine Fest table on February 19th!

Booze, Dudes, & Bears by Michael Hsiung wins the award for most accurately descriptive title of the year. Look at these little guys, having the best ol’ time!

There are many more shenanigans in what is shaping up to be one of my favorite sketchbooks.

Then there’s What A Gas by Nick Thorburn. You may know Nick as a rock and roller from bands like Islands and The Unicorns (and many others), but you may not have known that he is also a funny comic gentleman as well.

What A Gas collects two stories and a few gag strips; it’s a hefty little zine.

We’ve got our fingers in some other pies as well (mmm… pies), so be on the lookout for more fun SHQ zine projects in the future. See you at Zine Fest!

This Week’s Must Read Comics

Happy Friday, everybody!

The Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred #1

So cool, so weird. A bit beyond description, but perfect if you’re looking to read something refreshingly different.

Alpha Flight #8

I’m going to miss this series! I had never read any Alpha Flight before, but this limited series/then ongoing series/finally limited series has made me a fan of Canada’s finest super hero team. This final issue is a great ending to what was an entertaining 8 issue run.

American Vampire #23

I have to admit, American Vampire had kind of lost me with the last couple story arcs. I found them a bit… lacking, especially compared to how great the series was right out of the gate. Luckily, this current “Death Race” story is a return to form. Love the ’50s aesthetic, love vampire hunter car chases, all wonderful stuff.

The Walking Dead #93

Oh boy, I love it when Robert Kirkman starts shakin’ things up in the Walking Dead world. Big stuff’s happening, guys! (Trying to keep these things spoiler free, so that’s all I’m going to say.)

It was a bit of a light week for me single issue-wise, but some must read collections came out this week: Mark Waid’s Daredevil volume 1 in hardcover and the brilliant Sweet Tooth volume 4 in trade paperback. Get into it.

New Tattoo

A tribute to my favorite cartoonist, Jason.

I had wanted a Jason tattoo for years but could never decide on the specific art. I was perusing his blog (catswithoutdogs), saw this piece, and fell in love with it. I believe it was part of a commission for a Norwegian magazine.

The girl (I think I shall name her Ingrid) encapsulates a lot of what I love about Jason. The art is dynamic, classic, clever, and heck, she’s just adorable.

Many thanks to Chris at Alchemy Tattoo in Silver Lake!
