This Week’s Must Reads

Short ‘n’ sweet today, buddies!

Amazing Spider-Man #680

Spidey and Johnny Storm goofing around and saving the day IN SPACE. Robots that turn you into a zombie. What’s not to love about this book?!

Moon Knight #10

It’s a real shame this title is ending. While I liked it well enough from the start, I feel like it’s really picked up steam the last three issues or so. If you haven’t been reading it so far, I definitely recommending picking it up in trade; the first collection is already out.

Scalped #56

This issue takes us almost a year past where last month’s incredible issue ended. This book continues to surprise and impress me after all these years.

Walking Dead #94

Carl, you are one creepy kid.

Happy March, y’all.

This Week’s Must Reads

Things have been so crazy around here with this that and the other thing that I’ve been neglecting updating the site. My apologies to the two people who may be reading this!

Atomic Robo: Ghost of Station X #5

A (admittedly sort of convoluted) conclusion to the latest Atomic Robo tale. This is one of my favorite series that I feel everyone SHOULD be reading but not nearly enough people are.

Bulletproof Coffin: Disinterred #2

SO COOL. /fascinating commentary

Prophet #22

This book gave me craaaazy dreams. So rad to be reading a for real, serious sci-fi book every month.

Wolverine and the X-Men #6

One of my top 3 Marvel books coming out every month. It’s just great fun, definitely going to be a memorable X-Men run.

Runners up: Aquaman #6, American Vampire #24, Chew #24, Mighty Thor #11,

If you actually DO read these blog updates, what would you like to see more (or less) of? E-mail me (shq@thesecretheadquarters.com) or shoot me a Tweet (@theSHQ) to let me know.

Have a great weekend dudes and dudettes,

This Week’s Must Reads + Fun Comics Events

I am trying very hard not to be too repetitive with these, but there are just some books that are SO GOOD that it’s hard not to showcase them every time they come out.

Avenging Spider-Man #4

What a fun book! Not many comics make me chuckle out loud, but Avenging Spider-Man has been great about that so far. This wrapped-up-in-one issue was a wee bit cheesy at the end, but I l am definitely a sucker for that.

Batman #6

“AAAHHHHARRRGSOCOOL!” – my brain, while reading the last two issues of Scott Snyder’s Batman run. If you are not reading this book yet… I don’t get it, why are you not reading this book yet? Don’t read superhero books? Don’t generally read DC? You were thinking about checking this one out but afraid it might be over-hyped for you now? Forget it. Just start reading.

Daredevil #9

Daredevil is another book that kills it every time and is, I would say, unmissable. It’s been hyped quite a bit but that’s because it is so. very. good. I’m a fan of the Moloids, and Paolo Rivera’s art makes them and their corpse-stealing king extra cool and creepy.

Runners Up: Glory #23, Wonder Woman #6, Amazing Spider-Man #697.1, Winter Soldier #2

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION!

The new Jason book, Athos In America, came out on Wednesday! It is completely wonderful. 6 brand new short stories in a beautiful hardcover.

This Week’s Must Reads

Adventure Time #1

Everyone who knows me has heard me blather on at length about Adventure Time, so I will just say here that I’m a big fan of the show. The comic did not disappoint! Ryan North was a perfect choice to write the comic, and the art is great. Also, Aaron Renier’s back up store is really lovely (plus, it stars Tree Trunks!)

Batwoman #6

The first issue with art by Amy Reader. I was nervous about the change up since JH Williams’ art was a big part of what made the series great initially, but Reader did a wonderful job. I thought her art fit the feel of the book perfectly. Story-wise, it’s nice to be getting some answers about the Drowning Lady.

Severed #7

The conclusion to what has been a genuinely chilling horror story. Satisfying ending that gave me the heebie-jeebies.

Lobster Johnson: The Burning Hand #2

This is already even better than the last Lobster Johnson mini series. Two extremely cool new villains introduced. This book is fantastic, read it.

Runners Up: Wolverine and the X-Men #5, Conan the Barbarian #1, Thief of Thieves #1, Penguin: Pain and Prejudice #5, Powers #8, Incredible Hulk #5. It was an awesome week.

Another thing that I’ve been really enjoying this week is the beautiful new Young Romance hardcover, collecting some of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s best romance comics from the late ’40s – late ’50s. So, so entertaining. Just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Have a great weekend, friends!

SHQ + Michael DeForge

LA Zine Fest is less than two weeks away, and we have a new addition to our little zine family!

We are tickled to announce that we are putting out a mini comic with the one and only Michael DeForge, and it will be available at our zine fest table along with our Michael Hsiung & Nick Thorburn zines (and a few other great books.)

Hooray!
